Singapore Appoints Head Coach For National Women Team

SINGAPORE – 11 January 2009 - Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) is pleased to announce that it will be appointing Mr Zhou Shusen, to be the new Head Coach for the National Women team.

Born in 1941, Mr Zhou is a renowned and highly respected coach in the international table tennis community. He was China national coach and has trained 3 women world champions, among them current world number one Zhang Yining. In addition, as the Head coach of the Beijing women team since 1981, he has produced many outstanding players. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, of the eight women paddlers competing in the quarter finals, four of them were coached by Mr Zhou in some stages. They were Zhang Yining, Li Jia Wei, Wang Chen and Wu Xue.

He has received many accolades, such as “Voted Best head coach in 2007” and “2008 Beijing Olympic outstanding contribution award”.

“Year 2008 was a good year for Singapore. Our women players were outstanding in many international tournaments and the success in Beijing Olympics and the recent Macau ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals provided the perfect highlights. Looking ahead, our quest for higher grounds is given a big boost with the appointment of Mr Zhou Shusen. We are confident that his winning track records and ability to produced champions will greatly inspire our players and coaches and steer our national women team to more success and glory for Singapore. ” said President Er. Lee Bee Wah.

CEO Chew Soo Sheng said: “Our worldwide search for talented coaches have yield strong results. We are very honoured that Mr Zhou has agreed to accept our invitation to appoint him as our national women team head coach. As a coach in China, he has promoted about 20 players to the China national team. With such strong credentials, I believe that his guidance, experience and commitment will undoubtedly benefit and strengthen our national women team players and coaches. ”

Coach Zhou will join STTA on 13th January 2009.
